A Whale of a
Gulf of Maine Productions - Commercial tuna spotter pilots and their accompanying vessels regularly cover areas of the ocean where whale watch and research boats rarely venture to. These places are often important feeding areas for large, endangered whales such as humpbacks, finbacks and North Atlantic right whales. Thanks to the efforts of Pilot Tim Voorheis and Captain Bill Chaprales, whales in these areas were not only documented, but, on many occasions, saved from life threatening entanglements. In 11 years of flying, at least 15 different entangled large whales were observed by this dedicated Team. WDCS is thankful to the efforts of Captain Bill Chaprales, Pilot Tim Voorheis, and Mate Christian Valle for directly helping to save whales by reporting entanglements and for also for raising awareness through these beautiful photographs.
